Sagres

Not far to the southwest of Lagos is the small town of Sagres. It is located on the southern-most point of the Iberian Peninsula and near the southwestern-most point of continental Europe, Cabo de Sao Vicente. On the point of land near the town is the Fortress of Sagres, built in the 15th century by Henry the Navigator (Infante Dom Henrique) to protect shipping and the coast of Portugal.

The fortress has a single wall along the front and depends on the sheer cliffs for its defenses from the sea.

The area around the fortess is limestone rocks and gravel, barren of trees, but there are some low-growing shrubs and herbaceous plants. A few that were in bloom are shown here.
