Óbidos is located on a hilltop, encircled by a fortified wall. It is a well-preserved example of medieval architecture. As with most of the places we visted in Portugal, settlements in the area date from Roman or even much earlier times. The original fortification were established by the Moors, probably in the 8th century, and later taken over by the Christians in the 12th century. They have been remodelled and expanded since.
