Porto Bridges

Porto is defined for many by its bridges that span the Douro River, so much so that it is known as “The City of Bridges”. There are six of them connecting Vila Nova de Gaia on the south side of the river to Porto.

From west to east:
Arrábida
Luis I
Infante Dom Henrique
Dona Maria Pia (Railroad Bridge)
São João (St. John the Baptist) (Railroad Bridge)
Freixo

The most iconic is the Luis I Bridge. It was inaugurated in 1886 and is a two-level bridge connecting Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia. It is 476 ft. tall with a span of 564 ft. and overall length of 1263 ft. The Metro runs along the upper level and the lower is for automobile traffic. On a warm afternoon we were having our lunch just beneath the bridge and were suprised to see some local kids daring to dive or jump (repeatedly) about 35 ft. into the Douro.
