Jerónimos Monastery was built by King Manuel I starting in 1500 and was occupied by monks of the Order of St. Jerome, or Hieronymites, until 1833. It was built using taxes from trade from Africa nd the Orient, in the style that became known as “Manueline”. The building was expanded in 1860 with an annex that houses the National Archaeological Museum and the Maritime Museum.
