The medieval Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was ruined during the great 1755 Lisbon earthquake, which also destroyed Gothic Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on the southern facade of the convent. A portion of the building attached to the ruins is an archeological museum.  The convent was built in the 14th-early 15th centuries.
