Grand Staircase-Escalante

After driving the Notom-Bulldfrog Road on the east side of Capitol Reef, we turned onto Burr Canyon Road toward Boulder, with a side trip to Strike Vallley Overlook (see Capitol Reef). Burr Canyon is a long fairly narrow canyon with some interesting photo opportunities. The cottonwoods were at the height of their fall colors, and against the red sandstone walls, the scenery made for a pleasant drive. On our way to Bryce Canyon the next day, we came back partway to see if we could improve on the lighting, with some success.

Grand Staircase-big

There is so much to see in this area that one could easily spend a week or two. Maybe next fall…

The diagram at the right is a geologic cross-section of the Grand Staircase from Wikipedia that illustrates the fantsatic geological history of the area. Click on it to enlarge.
