Chateau de Pau-Outside

Previous

The Château de Pau is a castle in the centre of the city and dominates that quarter of Pau. Most of the major construction was done beginning in the 14th century with the Gaston Phoebus Keep (tower), and added to for many years after.

Henry IV of France and Navarre was born here on December 13, 1553, and there are several statues and paintings devoted to him, and many of the furnishings are from that era. It was once used by Napoleon as a holiday home during his period of power.

It has been classified as a Monument historique since 1840 by the French Ministry of Culture and contains a collection of large tapestries.
