Pau

We decided to start our Pyrenees visit in the city of Pau. We stayed at a hotel just west of Pau in the town of Lescar, and drove into the city to see the sights and for dinner each night.

Pau is the birthplace in 1553 of the future king of France, Henry IV, and the city was the capital of the principality of Bearne from the mid 15th to early 17th centuries. Today the population is about 80,000 people and the economy depends on aeorospace, oil & gas and tourism. You can read more about Pau here.
