Dingle Peninsula

After leaving Killarney we drove to Dingle spending three nights and exlporing the peninsula. Wonderful scenery and decent weather provided some nice scenery photo opportunities. We planned a trip to the now-abandoned Blasket Islands from Dunquin, but the boats were cancelled because of heavy seas.

The story of the Blasket Islands is interesting, but pretty depressing. They were inhabited for centuries by as many as 180 people and 20 some families in the 19th century, but the harsh life, famine and the departure of their young people led to a decline that could not be reversed. They were abandoned in 1953 with 30-some people being evacuated to the mainland.
