Würzburg is located on the Main River and it is dominated by the Fortress Marienberg, that served as a home of the local prince-bishops for nearly five centuries. Most of the current structures originally were built between the 16th and 18th centuries. Across a valley is the baroque Käppelle (little chapel), the shortened name for Pilgrimage Church of the Visitation of Mary. built in the 18th century. Other sites in the town include Marienkappele (Chapel of Mary) and the Neumünster Collegiate Church.
