| Description |
Habitat: Salt or clay flats, gravel bars, rocky areas, pastures, desert washes, sand dunes, creosote scrub, mesquite thickets. Plant: Erect annual with multiple stems branching from base, 2 to 14 inches tall. Leaves: Numerous smooth, fleshy, linear leaves crowded along the stem, 3/8 to 1-3/8 inches long. Inflorescence: Many-flowered, with flowers initially densely clustered but later spaced out along spikes up to 6 inches long; very small flowers less than 1/10-inch long with 4 green to white sepals surrounding 2 white or greenish-white petals; 3 protuding yellow anthers. Bloom Period: February to August. Fruit: Compressed-spherical capsule about 1/8 inch long and somewhat wider, 4-parted, opening at tip.
