| Description | Habitat: Found in relatively moist areas along streams, pond banks, washes. Plant: Erect, branched, tall annual, 3 to 4 ft high with smooth winged stems. Leaves: Alternate, lower and mid blades lanceolate to narrowly elliptic with smooth, toothed or lobed edges; upper blades lanceolate to linear with entire edges. Lower leaves wither by blooming time. Inflorescence: Panicles of many (20 to 200+) composite flower heads per plant, each about 1-1/2 inches across; 10 to 17 yellow rays 1/4 to 5/8-inch long often dark reddish-brown at bases; large, protruding ball-shaped central disk with 100 to 700+ florets, yellow near base becoming dark brown above; hairy phyllaries.
