| Description | Habitat: Clays, calcareous or sandy soils in disturbed places, grasslands and desert scrub. Plant: Erect perennial to 20 inches tall growing in dense tufts; much-branched hairy stems. Leaves: Basal and lower third of plant, alternate, on petioles up to 2 inches long; lower leaves oblanceolate to spatulate overall, 1-1/4 to 2-1/2 inches long (or more) and up to 1-1/4 inches wide, and deeply pinnately-lobed; smaller upper leaves with entire margins, sometimes toothed; hairy. Inflorescence: Single composite flower heads about 2 inches across atop peduncles 3 to 10 inches long arising from plant base; 5 to 14 rays (or maybe absent), yellow with prominent purplish veins beneath, and occasionally with a reddish base; center about 3/4-inch across with 60 to 100+ disk florets, yellowish in the center becoming dark red/purplish further out; 20 to 30 hairy phyllaries.
