Habitat: Sandy soils, on rock outcrops, in grasslands and woodlands in the desert Southwest; 3,000-7,500 ft. Plant: Perennial sub-shrub 10 to 20 inches tall; branched, rigid stems, woody at the base and red to brown in color. Leaves: Opposite, linear to oblong or elliptic, essentially sessile, about 1 inch long or less; surfaces are densely resin-dotted. Inflorescence: Solitary or clustered heads from leaf axils with 4 to 6 florets, each with small white 5-lobed protuding corollas with purplish throats; cylindrical involucres about 3/4-inch long with several rows of pointed, gland-dotted phyllaries; brownish bristles surround the florets that later become into seeds.
