Description Habitat: Chihuahuan desert scrub, rocky, limestone soils; 1600 to 5000 ft.
Plant: Solitary cactus with exposed portion of stem almost flush with the ground, less than 1-1/4 inch tall and 4 inches across; triangular, warty, overlapping tubercles with texture resembling rock chips; greenish-gray or brown becoming somewhat yellow with age.
Spines: None.
Inflorescence: Single or multiple pink to magenta flowers 1 to 1-3/4 inches across growing from the top of the stem; numerous yellow anthers on white filaments surround white stigma lobes.
Bloom Period: September to November.
