The area around Terlingua and Study Butte is much different than the national park just to the east. Badlands comprised of various volcanic sediments are mixed with layers of ley shales and limestone forming some of the most stark landscapes in the entire area. The photo above was taken at a favorite spot neaxt to Highway 118 just outside the national park west entrance, showing the volcanic badlands and the (volcanic) Chisos in the background.
