Looking southeast at dawn from Sotol Vista Overlook
Sotol Vista is on the Ross Maxwell road on the way to Santa Elena Canyon, and no hiking is required. In fact there are no trails. It is named for the Smooth Sotol (Dasylirion leiophyllum) found in abundance here.
Just north of Sotol Vista is the Blue Creek Canyon trailhead. The trail heads east toward the Chisos and ends 11 miles later at the South Rim via Laguna Meadows. Long before the end, about 1-1/2 miles from the trail head are some interesting hoodoos, seen below.
