The city of Ushuaia is the gateway to the Antarctic Peninsula. It is on the island of Tierra del Fuego and is the southern-most city in the world. It has a population of around 82,000 people.
Except for the Beagle Channel leading to the Drake Passage, the city is almost completely surrounded by the southern portion of the Andes mountains.
The economy is based on light manufacturing, oil and gas development, and tourism.
We were here for just a couple of hours before boarding the ship. It was a bright, sunny day. But, according to our guide, we were lucky because the weather is usually gloomy and rainy.
