The historical center of the city is called the Grand île, and this is where we spent most of our time. It is an island made by the River Ill, which empties into the Rhine east of the city, and the Canal du Faux Remparts. The canal was originally an arm of the river and was completed as a navigable canal in the early 19th century. Both ends of it connect to the River Ill.
One of the first things we did in Strasbourg was to take a cruise around the Grand île on a Batorama tourist boat.
