Mainz

Mainz, located along the Rhine, is a city with about 235,000 people, famous as the birthplace of Johannes Gutenberg, inventor of the movable type printing press. In the early 1450s, Gutenberg manufactured his first books in the city, including the Gutenberg Bibles.

Mainz was heavily damaged in World War II with about half of the old town in the city center being destroyed. Many of the buildings were since rebuilt.

There are two very impressive churches in Mainz.  St. Martin’s Cathedralis huge. It was built beginning in the 10th century and is predominantly Romanesque in style. St. Stephan’s Chuch, built in the 13th century, is noted for its Marc Chagall stained glass windows that were installed in the 1970’s.
