Hunawihr

Located on the Alsace Wine Route, Hunawihr is a typical Alsace village, about 10 miles northwest of Colmar and very close to Ribeauville. It is a very small town, 600 inhabitants, consisting of winegrower houses mostly built in the 15th to the 18th centuries. In these houses, the stone-built ground floor served as a storeroom while the upper floor, usually half-timbered, was the dwelling.

On the edge of town and overlooking the village and vineyards is the church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur (Saint James the Greater), built in the 15th-16th centuries, surrounded with its walled cemetery. The town has been under the control of Catholics and Protestants during its history. A “simultaneum” was put in place by Louis XIV in 1687 and, to this day, the church is in dual use by both the Protestant and Catholic communities.
