On our last day on the cruise we docked at Worms and took buses to Heidelberg, some 30 miles to the south. Heidelberg is a city famous for the oldest university in Germany (ca 1389) and its large scientific research community. It has about 160,000 people.
Of the sights to see, the most obvious is Heidelberg Castle, the ruins of which sit on a high hill overlooking the city. Originally built around 1300, it was expanded and fortified over the years, and was part of the warring history of Central Europe in the Middle Ages and beyond. It was finally partially reduced to ruins by fires caused by lightning in the 1700s.
This was our second trip to Heidelberg. In September, 2014, we were there while visiting our son who lived in Karlsrühe, Germany, not far away.
In the section below the 2024 photos are photos from the 2014 visit. Little has changed in 10 years (except the people…).
