Haut-Koenigsbourg is located southwest of Strasbourg in the Vosges Mountains, high above the Alsatian Plain. It was probably built in the 12th century and used by a number of powers in the Middle Ages. The castle was destroyed in 1633 during the Thirty Years War by a Swedish siege and was abandoned. From 1900 to 1908 German Kaiser Wilhelm II had it rebuilt and it is now a major tourist site.
